Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

The steps below explain how to check transmission fluid.

  1. Your engine should be warmed up, so turn the engine on for a few minutes before you start. Also, as an added safety precaution, make sure you set the parking brake before opening your hood.
  2. Find your transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive cars, it’s located to the right of the oil dipstick, but check your owner’s manual if you can’t locate it.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, rubbing it gently around between your first finger and thumb. The fluid should look pretty clear, with a slight pink hue. If it looks dirty or smells burnt, take your vehicle to the Porsche Stratham service center, near Nashua, for new transmission fluid.
  4. Wipe off the dipstick using a rag. Then reinsert the dipstick and pull it back out again. Check the level to see if it’s under the “Full” mark. If it is, you’ll need to add some more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the transmission fluid level to the “Full” mark, and be careful not to overfill it.

Now that you know how to check transmission fluid, if you experience any problems, feel free to contact us at Porsche Stratham and schedule service. We’ve been serving Portsmouth customers for years and are always happy to help.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If you can’t find a dipstick under your hood, don’t worry. Chances are your car has what is called a “sealed transmission.”Sealed” doesn’t mean you can’t access it. But it does mean there’s no dipstick to check the transmission fluid level. If your vehicle has a sealed transmission, don’t even try to check its fluid level because you could damage it. Our service team will check the transmission fluid level for you when you bring your car in for your next service appointment.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

So, how often do you check your transmission fluid anyways? Assuming you don’t have a sealed transmission, you should check it and all of your fluid levels once per month. That includes checking your transmission fluid, windshield wiper fluid, motor oil, and power steering fluid. Read your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule for your vehicle.
